The Centro Universitario de Arte, Arquitectura y Diseño, known as CUAAD, at the Universidad de Guadalajara is seeking a patent on a biotextile made from organic waste generated in tequila production, the university announced on August 6, 2026.

University officials disclosed the project at a press conference held to mark the 50th anniversary of CUAAD's industrial design degree program, according to the university's own news outlet, Gaceta UDG.

What the material is and how it was made

According to Gaceta UDG, the new material has an appearance and durability comparable to synthetic textile vinyl, and it is intended as a sustainable option for the fashion and accessories industry within a circular economy framework, suited to making items such as wallets and bags. The project originated inside CUAAD's doctoral program in innovation for sustainable habitat and was developed jointly with the University of the Basque Country in Spain, where researchers worked to process the organic waste into a material that could be engraved, laser cut, embroidered and machine cut, the university reported.

To demonstrate the material, students from CUAAD's fashion design and industrial design degree programs produced reinterpreted garments, including charro suit vests and bow ties, along with a wallet, the university said. Those pieces are on display at the Grassi Museum in Leipzig, Germany, as part of an exhibition titled The Soul of Objects, curated by Argentine curator Luján Cambariere, according to Gaceta UDG. The Grassi Museum complex in Leipzig houses the city's Museum of Applied Arts along with ethnography and musical instrument collections.

Doctoral researcher Ana Lariza Esparza Ponce, quoted by Gaceta UDG, described the aim of the work as removing the label of waste from agave byproducts and turning them into resources and useful materials through industrial design. The university did not disclose a patent application number, a filing date, or a timeline for when the material might reach commercial production, and no cost or yield figures for converting tequila industry waste into the biotextile have been published.
