Patron Tequila launched El Cielo, a four times distilled silver tequila made from 100% Weber Blue Agave, across United States retailers in April 2023 at a suggested retail price of $129 for a 750 milliliter bottle.
The brand, owned by Bacardi since 2018, describes El Cielo as the first prestige tequila to be distilled four times, a step carried out by master distiller David Rodriguez in the smallest copper pot still at Hacienda Patrón, the company's sole distillery in Atotonilco El Alto, Jalisco, registered under NOM 1492.
Why a fourth distillation stands out in tequila
Most blanco tequila passes through a still twice, occasionally three times. Robb Report, covering the release in April 2023, noted that a fourth pass through the still is an outlier for the category rather than a standard practice. Patrón framed the extra distillation as a way to concentrate sweetness rather than strip it out. Rodriguez told The Drinks Business at launch that the brand had developed the process using the smallest copper pot still at Hacienda Patrón, calling the extra stage "extremely rare within the industry." Global chief marketing officer Kathy Parker said in the same announcement that adding a distillation is commonly assumed to dilute flavor, but that the company did not find that to be the case with El Cielo.
How the rollout reached global markets
El Cielo went on sale in the United States in April 2023 at $129 a bottle, according to Bev Industry's coverage of the global launch announcement. The tequila reached the United Kingdom on July 3, 2023, sold exclusively through Selfridges stores in London, Manchester and Birmingham and on the retailer's website, at a recommended price of £170, roughly $212 at the time, per The Spirits Business and The Drinks Business. By September 2023, The Spirits Business reported the tequila was also stocked at The Whisky Exchange at £185 and had reached retail in the US, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Greece, France, Italy and Australia alongside the UK. Selfridges currently lists the 700 milliliter bottle at £140. In Singapore, Patrón staged a launch event for El Cielo at CÉ LA VI on August 22, 2024, with packages starting at SGD $890, according to coverage by 88 Bamboo.
What Patrón discloses about the liquid, and what hasn't been published
Patrón's own materials, cited in the April 2023 launch coverage from The Spirits Business, list the ingredients as 100% Weber Blue agave, water and yeast, with the tequila crafted in small batches. The company has not published an independent laboratory analysis of El Cielo's composition, which is typical across most commercial tequila releases and is not a claim specific to this bottling. Patrón has also not disclosed a precise distillation proof or yield figure for the fourth pass beyond the finished 40% ABV, so what changes at each stage of the four distillations remains the company's account rather than a published technical record.
Patrón's ownership and pedigree
Patrón was founded in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley, with early production handled by the Siete Leguas distillery before the brand built its own Hacienda Patrón, which began operating under NOM 1492 in the 2000s. Bacardi Limited took a minority stake in Patrón's parent company in 2008, then agreed in January 2018 to acquire full ownership in a transaction that valued the company at $5.1 billion, according to CNBC and CBS News reporting at the time. The deal closed in May 2018, with then Bacardi chief executive Mahesh Madhavan saying the acquisition would help grow Patrón's distribution outside the United States.
What this means
I'll note that Patrón's flagship Silver carries a TW Score of 64 of 95 in our database; El Cielo, the quadruple-distilled extension of that same liquid, has not been evaluated and does not currently carry a score. Worth watching as the line matures past its UK and Singapore rollouts is whether Patrón publishes more detail on what the fourth distillation actually removes or concentrates, beyond the marketing language retailers have repeated since 2023.
