Sydney fashion label Bassike and 1800 Tequila, the Jose Cuervo sibling brand controlled by Mexico's Beckmann family, have released a denim jacket limited to 18 pieces, sold only through Bassike's Byron Bay store and website.

Vogue Australia covered the tie up, framing it as a design exchange between an Australian coastal label and a tequila house rooted in the Los Altos highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Bassike's own product listing describes the piece, called the Universal Denim Jacket, as a collaboration built around materials, dye work and stitching rather than a co-branded bottle or packaging run.

What the jacket is actually made of

According to Bassike's listing, the jacket is handmade from 100 percent organic rigid cotton denim in an oversized, universal fit. The finish layers a faded, sun bleached indigo base with a terracotta tint, hand sanding and a stone wash, a combination the brand says was designed to evoke the volcanic soils and agave fields of Los Altos. Each jacket is individually hand distressed, with grinding and fraying worked into the collar, cuffs, seams and pocket flaps by hand, so no two pieces finish identically. The garment carries hand sewn Bassike chainstitching that the brand says references Mayan pyramid forms, plus hand stencilled detailing inside both pockets. Bassike lists the run at 18 jackets total, available exclusively at its Byron Bay store and on Bassike.com.

Who owns 1800 Tequila

1800 Tequila is not an independent producer. It is owned by the Beckmann family, the same family behind Jose Cuervo, through the publicly traded Mexican parent company Becle. The brand's US production, marketing and distribution runs through Proximo Spirits, a Beckmann family company formed in 2007 and based in Jersey City, New Jersey, whose portfolio also includes Jose Cuervo, Maestro Dobel and Gran Centenario. In Australia, 1800 Tequila is distributed by Proximo Australia, a business that began in 2007 as Island2Island Beverage Co. before Proximo Spirits acquired it in 2017. 1800 Tequila itself dates to 1967, when it launched as Cuervo 1800, named for the year tequila is said to have first been aged successfully in oak. Its trapezoidal bottle and crest, which carries a Mayan pyramid motif and the initials of chairman Juan Domingo Beckmann, are the same visual references the brand says inspired the jacket's chainstitching.

Who is Bassike

Bassike was founded in Sydney in 2006 by Deborah Sams and Mary Lou Ryan, launching with a range of organic cotton T shirts designed from a cottage on Palm Beach before expanding into denim, tailoring and footwear. The label markets itself on local manufacturing and organic sourcing, and its founders won the 2021 Australian Fashion Laureate for sustainable innovation. Bassike currently operates nine stores across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, including the Byron Bay location where the tequila branded jacket is sold in person, alongside a website that ships internationally.

What has not been disclosed

Neither company's public materials list a retail price for the jacket, a specific release date, or details of any broader campaign beyond the single garment. It is not stated whether the collaboration extends to other products, whether it coincides with a 1800 Tequila marketing push in Australia, or whether purchase of the jacket is tied in any way to the tequila itself. Those points remain unaddressed in the material currently published by either party.
