Chris Brown received an eight month prison sentence, suspended for twelve months, at Southwark Crown Court in London on October 26, 2026, after pleading guilty to striking producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle in February 2023.
Brown, 37, had faced up to three years in prison after entering that plea to a single count of affray in July 2026, over an attack on the dance floor of Tape, a private members' club in London's Mayfair neighborhood, in the early hours of February 19, 2023, according to the Associated Press and the BBC. His vocal coach, American rapper Omololu Akinlolu, pleaded guilty to the same charge and was sentenced alongside him.
What the CCTV footage showed in court
Southwark Crown Court was shown three pieces of CCTV footage from inside Tape on the night of the attack, the BBC reported. The footage showed Brown striking Diaw four times with a glass bottle, connecting twice with his head and once with his shoulder, before others in the club pulled him away, according to the BBC and the Associated Press. The court heard the attack left Diaw needing hospital treatment, the BBC reported.
Judge Tony Baumgartner told the court that Brown's repeated use of the bottle, aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous and carried the risk of a more serious injury than Diaw ultimately sustained, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutor Claire Campbell of the Crown Prosecution Service described it after the guilty plea as a vicious and unprovoked attack in a crowded nightclub in which Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim's head twice, ABC7 New York reported.
How the case moved from arrest to guilty plea
The attack took place at Tape in Hanover Square, Mayfair, on February 19, 2023, and both Brown and Akinlolu were charged in connection with it, according to reporting on the case by Yahoo News. Brown did not return to Britain until May 2025, when he was arrested at 2am at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester by Metropolitan Police detectives ahead of a UK tour, Yahoo News and Deadline reported.
He was initially held in custody, then released after Southwark Crown Court set bail at 5 million pounds, roughly 6.7 million dollars, with conditions barring him from the nightclub and from contacting Diaw, Yahoo News reported. Brown originally pleaded not guilty across three charges, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon, with a trial date set for October 26, 2026, according to NBC News. In July 2026 he changed his plea to the single lesser charge of affray, and prosecutors dropped the other three charges in exchange, ABC7 New York reported.
What happened to the civil claim against Brown
Diaw separately filed a lawsuit against Brown in the United States seeking 16 million dollars in damages, alleging that the attack left him needing hospital treatment and crutches, Yahoo News reported at the time the suit was filed. That civil case was later dismissed with prejudice at Diaw's request, Rolling Stone reported, and no settlement has been confirmed.
What the judge said about Brown's fame
At sentencing, Baumgartner told Brown that his celebrity status would not earn him leniency, saying his fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle him to special treatment, according to a court account carried by The Blast. The judge nonetheless suspended the custodial term, citing the guilty plea, Brown's steady employment, his charitable work and the time that had passed since his last conviction, the Associated Press reported. Akinlolu received a four month sentence, also suspended for twelve months, and both men were ordered to pay 1,500 pounds toward costs, the BBC reported.
