El Paso natives Jaime Cabrera and Ernie Montoya have launched El Músico Tequila, a Blanco fermented while music from a featured independent artist plays over open tanks, with a public debut set for August 15, 2026, in downtown El Paso.

The company calls the technique MusiCrafted fermentation. Its first batch was made to the forthcoming album from Kansas City band Making Movies, a Latin Grammy nominee, played over the tanks for the entire fermentation cycle, according to KFOX14 and CBS4 El Paso.

How does MusiCrafted fermentation work?

Champagne yeast converts 100 percent blue Weber agave inside open fermentation tanks while music from a featured artist plays overhead throughout the process, according to KISS El Paso's account of the method. Co-founder Jaime Cabrera described it to KFOX14 this way: as the yeast converts the agave, music from a featured independent artist plays overhead throughout the entire transformation, and he said the company believes the sound waves can change the way the tequila tastes.

El Paso Inc, which visited the production site, described the technique as pushing sound waves directly into the mosto, the mixture of agave juice and yeast undergoing fermentation. Cabrera told the outlet the company is exploring building a custom tank fitted with speakers and subwoofers to intensify the effect.

The founders trace the concept to reports of Mexican distilleries that play classical music during fermentation on the theory that sound vibrations help yeast break down sugars more evenly, according to El Paso radio station KLAQ's telling of the brand's origin story. El Paso Inc reported that unspecified controlled studies in microbiology and fermentation science back what it called the Mozart Effect, though the outlet did not name a study, a researcher or a publication, and El Músico has not released its own data on the subject.

Who founded El Músico Tequila, and where is it made?

El Paso Inc identified four people behind the brand: Jaime Cabrera as founder and chief executive, Jesse Cabrera as co-founder and chief commercial officer, Ernie Montoya as co-founder and chief technology officer, and Rachael Wilby as chief brand officer. Jaime Cabrera, who also fronts El Paso rock act Sour Mash Jack, gave interviews about the venture from his home in Long Beach, California, the outlet reported.

Production runs under contract at Casa Tequilera de Arandas, a distillery in Arandas, Jalisco, that holds Mexican producer registration NOM 1499, according to the distillery's own account of its certification. Arandas sits in the Los Altos highlands, a region El Paso Inc described as globally known as the Land of Tequila.

What happens at the August 15 launch event?

The founders are holding a free public launch party on Saturday, August 15, at B-17 Bombers Oyster Pub, 201 South El Paso Street in downtown El Paso, with doors opening at 7 p.m. for guests 21 and older, according to KFOX14. The first 50 attendees will receive a complimentary El Músico cocktail, and the outlet reported the evening will include live music, limited-edition merchandise, giveaways and a chance to meet the founders.

What isn't yet documented

El Músico currently sells only the Blanco. El Paso Inc reported that reposado and añejo expressions are planned for after launch, along with a lower-proof, electrolyte-added ready-to-drink line called Festival Fuel aimed at music festivals, at roughly 5 percent alcohol by volume. The company has not published a retail price, a distribution footprint beyond the El Paso launch, or any independent lab analysis of the finished spirit.

El Músico's website says the brand will direct 5 percent of proceeds back to independent musicians, but it does not specify how that pledge will be tracked, audited or reported over time.

What this means

A fermentation soundtrack is a story a bottle can tell, not a production standard anyone outside the company has verified. Nothing in the coverage so far isolates music as a variable separate from tank design, yeast strain or barrel choice. El Músico has not yet submitted a bottle for blind tasting, so its purity status sits, for now, in the same unclassified place most first-release craft brands occupy before the liquid, rather than the playlist, gets judged.
