CUAAD, the Centro Universitario de Arte, Arquitectura y Diseño at the Universidad de Guadalajara in Jalisco, announced on August 6, 2026 that it has developed a patent-pending biotextile made from organic waste generated during tequila production.
The material, named TW Biotextil after Agave tequilana Weber, the blue agave variety distilled into tequila, is built to match the look and durability of synthetic vinyl textile, according to Gaceta UDG, the university's official news outlet. Officials described it as a candidate for wallets, bags and other accessories within a circular economy model that turns tequila byproducts into design materials.
What the biotextile is made from and how it behaves
The project began as doctoral research inside CUAAD's PhD program in Innovation for Sustainable Habitat, and was developed jointly with the University of the Basque Country in Spain, where chemical engineers validated the material in specialized laboratories, according to Gaceta UDG. The finished biotextile can be worked with laser engraving, laser cutting, embroidery and machine sewing, the outlet reported, properties the university says make it suitable for small leather goods and apparel accents rather than bulk fabric yardage.
From a doctoral thesis to a museum wall in Leipzig
To demonstrate the material, students in CUAAD's Fashion Design and Industrial Design programs built reinterpretations of the traditional charro suit, including vests and bow ties, along with a wallet, according to Gaceta UDG. Those pieces are on display at the Grassi Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig, Germany, as part of an exhibition titled The Soul of Objects: Applied Arts from Latin America. The show, curated by Argentine curator Luján Cambariere, opened May 7, 2026 and runs through September 27, 2026, bringing together more than 200 works by 56 artists and craftspeople from 13 Latin American countries, according to the exhibition's own materials and coverage by TLmagazine.
Who led the project and what CUAAD disclosed
The researcher behind the work is Dr. Ana Larisa Esparza Ponce, who now coordinates CUAAD's Bachelor's program in Industrial Design, according to UDG TV, the university's broadcast outlet. Esparza Ponce framed the project around turning waste into a locally sourced, renewable material, and pointed to Jalisco holding roughly three-quarters of Mexico's agave inventory as the reason the state also carries a proportional share of agave byproduct, Gaceta UDG reported.
