COYA, the Peruvian-inspired restaurant and nightlife group founded in London in 2012, and Tequila Barajas, a family-owned distillery based in Amatitán, Jalisco, have launched a 50-bottle tequila collection called the COYA x Tequila Barajas Artisan Edition, available only at COYA venues.
Trade coverage of the release, including reports from Retail Times and The Three Drinkers published in October 2026, describes a run of hand-painted ceramic bottles spanning four tequila categories, sold by the pour, by the bottle and in cocktails rather than through retail.
What is actually in the Artisan Edition
The collection totals five designs, one for each letter of C.O.Y.A., each inspired by a different COYA restaurant location, according to the companies' own announcement of the partnership. The liquid spans Blanco, Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo, aged between eight months and four years across French oak, American oak and ex-bourbon barrels, per that same announcement. Two bottles carry extra distinction: the Extra Añejo is finished with applied 24 carat gold detailing, and the Blanco was produced exclusively for COYA and is not sold anywhere else, Retail Times and The Three Drinkers both reported.
The ceramic vessels themselves are the other half of the story. Retail Times reported that each bottle is hand-painted by a family of women artisans in Mexico and takes around eight days to finish, with roughly seven hours spent on the painting alone, and that every bottle is individually numbered and signed by its maker. A separate company statement circulated by COYA put the figure at eight artisans working across ten days per bottle, a discrepancy between accounts that has not been reconciled in public reporting. With output capped at 50 bottles worldwide, the edition is currently limited to COYA Mayfair, Monte Carlo, Marbella and Ibiza, with Dubai to follow, according to Retail Times.
Who is Tequila Barajas
Tequila Barajas was founded in 1997 by Gerardo Barajas, who trained under Francisco Alcaraz, a former maestro tequilero at Siete Leguas who later worked at Patrón, according to retailer profiles of the brand. Gerardo Barajas is credited with developing the desfibrador, a low-yield extraction method that separates agave juice from fiber without the heavier mechanical shredding used elsewhere in the category, retailer materials describing the distillery state. The operation is based in Amatitán rather than the Los Altos highlands, and hand-painted ceramic packaging, produced in partnership with ceramicist Mauricio Servin, is a feature of the brand's standard line as well as this collaboration, according to the distillery's retail partners. A Total Wine concierge listing states that annual production is capped at 2,500 bottles of Reposado, 1,500 of Añejo and 500 of Extra Añejo, though that figure has not been independently corroborated by trade press.
Who is COYA
COYA opened its first site on Piccadilly in Mayfair in 2012 under restaurateur Arjun Waney, who also founded Zuma and Roka, according to contemporaneous restaurant coverage. The group has since expanded to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Monte Carlo, Marbella, Mykonos, Doha, Riyadh, Muscat and Barcelona, with a COYA Ibiza property set to open in 2026, per the company's own site listings. This is not COYA's first turn with Tequila Barajas: Riviera Buzz reported that the distillery also supplies hand-painted, numbered bottles reserved for COYA's bar programme in Monte Carlo, and COYA Club Marbella has previously run a Tequila Barajas tie-in cocktail for a Halloween event, per the venue's own listings.
What this means
Pricing for individual bottles in the Artisan Edition has not been disclosed by either company, and no outlet reviewed has published it. Tequila Barajas does not currently appear in Tequila Watch's bottle database, so none of the expressions used in this collection carry a published TW Score.
